Stockholm, known for its stunning archipelago and vibrant cultural scene, is also celebrated for its efficient and extensive public transportation system. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, navigating the city’s buses, trains, trams, and ferries can be a seamless and enjoyable experience. From the sleek, modern metro stations adorned with incredible art to the convenient bus and tram networks that cover every corner of the city, Stockholm offers a variety of options to get around with ease. This guide will walk you through the essentials of Stockholm’s transportation system, providing tips on how to make the most of your travels, understand ticketing, and explore the city like a local. Let’s dive into the world of Stockholm’s public transport and discover how to move effortlessly through this beautiful Scandinavian capital.
Basics First
All public transport in Stockholm is operated by SL (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik). In order to travel with SL, you will need a valid ticket.
- A single ticket costs 42 SEK and lasts for 75 minutes. You can take as many rides as you want within that time.
- There are no zone divisions — the ticket cost remains the same no matter where you travel in the city.
- Long-term ticket options (as of July 2024) include:
- 24-hour ticket – 175 SEK
- 72-hour ticket – 350 SEK
- 7-day ticket – 455 SEK
- 30-day ticket – 1020 SEK
Tickets can conveniently be purchased via the SL mobile app.
You can commute using:
- 🚇 Subway (Tunnelbana)
- 🚌 Bus
- 🚋 Tram (Spårvagn)
- 🚉 Commuter trains (Pendeltåg)
- ⛴️ SL Boats
One of my favorite summer activities is hopping on an SL boat to explore the islands around the city. It’s an affordable and enjoyable way to connect with Swedish nature and spend quality time with friends!
Alternatives to Public Transport
If you're someone who enjoys freedom and flexibility, there are alternative ways to get around Stockholm:
🚴♂️ Bicycle
- Biking is a popular and practical choice in Stockholm.
- Buy affordable second-hand bikes from online marketplaces.
- The city is bike-friendly with dedicated bike lanes and repair shops.
🛴 E-Scooters & E-Bikes
- Multiple companies offer rentable scooters and electric bikes — a great option when you’re in a hurry.
The only downside of not choosing public transport is that you don’t get to experience the beautiful Stockholm subway. Did you know that it is considered to be the longest art exhibition of the world?
